The MCIC Community Vitality Index (CVI) generates a score from 1-100 for every census tract in the six-county Chicago metropolitan region. The score is a way to "grade" each census tract in relation to the region as a whole. For example, if a tract has a CVI score of 87, it means that 87% of the tracts in the region have lower CVI scores. Use custom maps/reports to generate scores for areas that you define.

Civic, social service, and philanthropic organizations can use this information to understand the relative strengths of different areas in the region. Users can pull the data to support discussions and develop action priorities that consider and build on the status of local community assets.

  • Printable maps provide a graphic understanding of CVI, and make a great addition to proposals and reports. Point and click maps customize the index score to a geographic boundary of your own choosing.

  • The composite index provides scores at the U.S. Census tract level so you can use maps and data tables to visually compare individual community areas to regional norms. Resource distribution decisions can be confirmed on maps with zoom-in and zoom-out capability.

  • CVI scores are derived from more than 25 indicators compiled from well-validated data sources. The source data is specific to each census tract in the six-county region -- an incredible level of “data detail” available on request exclusively to MCIC members.

What can CVI do for me?

CVI helps you better understand the community impact of demographic changes that have occurred in the region. With CVI, you have easy access to information that can be used to:

  • Understand community assets and needs
  • Foster dialogue and create solutions to problems
  • Identify potential collaborations and leverage resources to improve quality of life
  • Inform public debate with visually compelling “data pictures”
  • Validate resource distribution decisions

The MCIC Community Vitality Index encourages dialogue about community assets and areas for improvement. It engages users, through the use of maps, to create a “community story” and compare impressions against real data. The examples that follow give some ideas about how CVI can help you. Think about the possibilities raised by the interplay component scores in your community.
